FASHION WEEK

Thus far everything has been going great! Fashion's Conscience launched Syracuse University's first ever fashion week! Everyone is stoked and the feedback has been great thus far! We made the Daily Orange twice! And we have the first fashion exhibit on the quad and to top it all off we will be the first to ever host a fashion show in the lobby of the Student center. Yup! It's pretty big and I am pretty excited. I'll be sure to put up more pictures as they roll in! Gear-up!

“Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?"

So as you all may already know, the wonderful Chris Rock will be releasing a movie called "Good Hair", that i am uber excited about! The movie tackles the big issue of hair particularly in the black society. Celebrities icons(barbies) Nia Long, Maya Angelou, Salt and Peppa, Megan Good, Laura London (to name a few) all guest star in movie discussing weaves, their ideas/illusions about hair and more importantly the definition of GOOD HAIR. Chris Rock experiments with creamy crack (perms/relaxers)with renowned scientists.I think this movie was a wonderful idea coming from the perspective of a father of daughters growing to understand how to appreciate their culture, their beautiful Black features, and their HAIR. I appreciate all those actresses, and renowned artists who participated in this documentary; letting the whole world know that beauty does not rest on appearance, the media , or the illusions perpetuated in our societies. I love love love it all! I'll be sure to provide a movie review after it's all said and done! Yeas 'm excited. I'm tired of asking "Damn, IS that her HAIR" ? grr. and every more tired of the phrase
"Oh you got that good hair" - bewildered.

Fashion's Conscience

As you may or may not know, since my freshmen year i have been apart of the wonderful fashion group on campus called Fashion's Conscience. The purpose of the organization is to promote and expose minorities in the fashion industry, studying underlying fashionistas that have made it big in the fashion world. It is no secret that the fashion world is primarily dominated by particular races, so we collaborate to use our resources here on campus to create a voice for those who aspire to work in the vicious fashion field, or those who take a keen interest in the fashion realm. It is a wonderful program , and i hold it very dear to me. Being a junior now and the community service chair of the organization, i have seen first hand how this program has made a difference and will continue to make strides in bettering the chance for opportunity to those other fashion barbies (and kens!).
This year we are launching a new community service program reaching out to high school lads, teaching them about fashion history, illustration, and guiding them to not only to fashion world but paving the way to make it to college and beyond. Through the program, we wish to serve as a role models and inspirations for those wanting to continue to college and convince those who weren't of the great oppurtunity higher education proposes. Syracuse has one of the highest illiteracy and poverty rates that may hinder many young ones from continuing to higher education. We will use our program to make (at least the smallest of )a difference promoting self consciousness, and focusing on literacy through the arts namely fashion! I am uber EXCITED because i am the spearhead for this project from running to meetings every Thursday to squeezing money from local sponsors i am quite enthusiastic about this! Stay tuned! I'll be sure to provide more details throughout the year about the program, our big fashion, our two fashion weeks, our fashion shoot party , and our much anticipated artist for the spring show!

Winter wonderland ! [no literally]

SOOOOOO ! this winter I think I'll be visiting Germany once again with mi familia and some friends. I love love the crisp air of Frankfurt during the winter! Don't get me wrong it's freezing but the city is SO clean. Total opposite from New York City. My last Christmas break was spent in NYC, definitely love my city but i think i'd prefer to get away this break!

I just came from Paris for Spring Break. It was only a week but it was phenomenal. I should be going back soon. I'll be sure to take more pictures. (my digital camera died and of course i forgot an adapter!). I have more pictures, so i'll be sure to put more up! xo(oh! and that's my uncle! ... he's still trying to teach me French siigh)

oh ! by the way j'adoreee Louis Vutton !

yikes INTERNSHIPS!

So it's getting around that time where SMART college students look for internships for their summer past time!BRACE yourself because boy is it annoying! Every year it's the same cyclic phrase of events; emails, phone calls, video blogs, written samples, almost stalkerish. Don't give up fashionistas!
Tips that I have been suggested here at Syracuse University Institute and others in professional career fields:
- Be creative. [ Kelly Cutrone founder and owner of People's Revolution Public relations and Branding company, suggested sending a video resume. If you are applying for a creative field be creative]
- Do your research. More than likely, you'd have to result to a phone interview. Interviewers only have your answers, tone and professionality to rely on. Know what you're talking about! responses such as "Well, I like fashion and i like what they do on "The Hills" will be sure to put that RED stamp on your application!
- Be aggressive. Not annoying! I had to learn the hard way , that it is important to find the balance between assertive and passive; annoying and determined. Follow up emails, and calls are expected but simply not everyother day. Try every month until closest to summer you may want to send emails every other week.
- TIME is of the essence. Remember there are TONS of other brillant, competitive barbies out there! Don't ever think it's only you applying for the job. You may be pleasantly surprised.
- Have fun! Most of the positions you are applying for, namely in the fashion or creative fields, are laid back environments but also demand professionality, and great work ethic. Show the employer you are a versatile candidate; able to come to work with jeans and be more productive than those in a suits.

and No! i am not expert in interviews, or scoring jobs but i thought it was important to share the advice that i have been given! They never fail me! But good luck to all those attempting to leap to greater bounds! xoxo.

"Thicker than your average"

So Glamour Magazine, takes it a couple sizes up for their November issue to present a more realistic view of women. Lifesize barbies! Though, i believe it's overdue
( too little too late) and a bit cliche, i do praise the editor-and chief Cindi Leive for taking the time to present real women with real curves. I am sure at least one person out there will be inspired. And in the end that's one more person to worry about body image and perpetuated the size 0 minny barbie sterotype.

September issues

devour it . enjoy it. indulge.

Fashion Week

So look what we have here! Those of you who know me I have a slight fascination in this character we call Noami! She quite different from the usual dollies.. Quite daring.. outspoken and often times downright crazy! But i love her. Here she is at London fashion week modeling in ISSA fashion show. J'adore!

And here we have supermom! Victoria Beckham. You guys will come to see how much i adore here. I am all for the simple, structured, tailored looks that Victoria seems to have mastered. Until proven otherwise, she will remain one of the top dress in my dictionary. xo.

Preggos! and i think im loving

Every so often we believe models are inhumane! We convince ourselves that they are billboards and innate characters. WELL! Model Jordan Dunn has broken the role. Barbie has spoken! Though our "best model" is relatively new to the scene she is expecting. A woman who isnt afraid to put her life "on hold" but livign her own. Something i respect! You get it girl! xo

They ask why Barbie

BARBIEtm ....

Yes, us lads all love all the glits and glamour of the concept of barbiehouses/ dollhouses. And yes I fall victim to my fascination to the famous barbie but im afraid for a different reason then the mainstream. Barbie in many ways symbolizes feminity. She has taken her token trademark to a created a standard for women and girls. While i dont completely agree with the stigma of skinny, minnies running about, i do believe in the idea of role model. Barbie has done so for the past decades and will prevail to do so for the decades to come. I wish to be the role model and aspire young token females to continue to strive for excellence, prosperity, and power. yes power! In someone's eyes i am barbie! I can recollect many strong dominant females that I have considered ideal role models, I am determined to past to the torch. It is not every often growing up in an environment such as Harlem, that you'll find level headed, humble , beautiful female figures.. I'd like to break the cycle. One step at a time... Let's spark someone's light. I'll be someone torched flame. I'll be barbie for the day ;-)

Ciao Bellas!

xo.

I love College.

Barbie goes off to college. haha!

So yes, tis true i am junior! But starting a blog I must must pay some tribute to my escuela:

Syracuse University.. where it seems like everything can happen.

Props where's its due <3!

Now, I always think its quite important to give props where it's due. Something i think isn't done enough on a general scale: especially amongst the Katty girlies. So i'll take a moment to pay tribute to the phenomenal females figures that have inspired me to take the leap and BLOG!
